If you are a network administrator, then you surely know that the simplest way of checking if a computer is correctly configured on the network, or a website is up and running is to ping them. Windows includes a ping utility, but, unfortunately, it doesn't raise to most user's expectations because it's limited in features. An alternative is PingTester, a ping utility that adds a lot of functions to the default Windows ping utility.

It's clear that PingTester is a Windows application and, moreover, there isn't any version of it that this program won't support. At the same time, there is no computer configuration that PingTester won't be compatible with, because it needs minimum system resources to function.

The interface of PingTester seems pretty close to the one of the default Windows ping utility but in reality, it is not the same, in fact it's far more improved than that. First of all, more servers can be added to a list, making them easier to ping on a daily basis. PingTester includes some sample servers, like yahoo.com or google.com, that allows one to test the functionality of the software. Pinging can be done using a lot of options. For example, the test interval, buffer size and time out period can all be configured.

If you were to use the regular ping utility, you would have to configure all these settings manually, by typing certain command lines. Now you can do this with a simple mouse click. Besides pinging various IPs or server names, PingTester can also scan servers, quickly finding their hostname and MAC address. It can also apply the tracert command to an IP. This refers to watching the route of the data packet from the user's computer to the server and it's very useful in case a server is not responding, as it can display the point where the route is broken.

The list of IP addresses can be exported to a text file, so it can be reused. Besides that, a server can be continuously pinged.

Pros

It features many more options than the regular ping utility that comes with Windows. Moreover, it can tracert a packet to a certain server. Besides that, more IPs and hostnames can be added to a list, for easier pinging them.

Cons

If you are not a network administrator, but a plain computer user, then you may need some time to accommodate with the interface. PingTester is a sustainable replacement for the Windows default ping utility.
